It blooms when all others fade. We are talking about Elleboro, a flower of the Ranunculaceae family, also known as Christmas Rose because it blooms in December. In this case, however, Elleboro is above all the commercial name of a Tuscan IGT white wine proposed by Bolgheri-based Podere Conca. As is often the case in this corner of Tuscany, Elleboro is also a blend of international grapes. Specifically Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed, crushed and fermented in steel tanks. It also continues its ageing process in steel, for about 4 months. This is followed by bottling and a further ageing period in the cellar of at least 2 months. Straw yellow, as soon as it is poured it reveals a beautiful bouquet with a decidedly fruity character. It is easy to discern, for example, notes of yellow summer fruit, such as peach and apricot, both ripe and juicy. The palate then reveals a powerful white, with a nice structure, well supported by fresh acidity and convincing flavour. It is the right wine to start the evening with. Excellent as an aperitif, on the table it goes well with fish dishes or light appetisers.

Les Arums de Lagrange is a white wine offered by Chteau Lagrange. We are in the Saint-Julien area, the heart of Bordeaux, where the chteau, now owned by the Japanese giant Suntory (the Whisky company), has one of the largest vineyards in the area. The name Arums may refer to the calla-like flowers, the 'arums', that grow in the chteau's gardens, but it may also wink at the concept of 'aroma'. A juxtaposition, the latter, certainly not accidental. Les Arums de Lagrange, in fact, comes from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc in large part, Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. White wines, it must be said, are in the Médoc, and in Saint-Julien in particular, rather rare, since production here concentrates more on the great reds from Cabernet Sauvignon. And yet, what one discovers when tasting it is a white of great intensity, without sacrificing elegance. A classic, balanced white Bordeaux, with herbaceous hints and a wonderful combination of floral and fruity notes, from grapefruit and white peach to passion fruit and tangerine. Vibrant and crisp, in the mouth it guarantees great pleasantness and a delicately velvety finish.

Let's start with the name. Agapanthus is derived from Agapanthus, a flower of the Liliaceae family native to South Africa. Its origin is Greek and derives from 'agape', meaning love, and 'anthos', flower. Specifically, Podere Conca's Agapanthus is a Bolgheri DOC, which is the result of processing Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Ciliegiolo. The grapes, having reached perfect ripeness, are harvested by hand, destemmed, crushed and fermented with the skins in steel tanks for about 20 days. After processing, the wine then matures for about 12 months in wooden barrels, in particular tonneaux and second-passage French oak barriques. In the glass it has a beautiful, intense and lively red colour. The nose expresses prevalent notes of red fruits. In the mouth, however, it reveals a beautiful harmony and persistence despite being young and exuberant. A wine of great pleasantness and character, this Tuscan red goes well with cured meats, cheeses and not too savoury red meats. Its softness and good natural balance, however, make it suitable for the whole meal.
