This years's relases are poignant as Pio Boffa recently passed away. This is the estae's classic Barolo, porduced with Nebbiolo grapes located in the top plots across different communes since 1881. The wine is floral, focused on violet and rose, with a blood orance touch, yet a darker fruit and chocolatery flavour. Starting with the 2020 vintage - which demonstrated the incredible resilience of Mother Nature at such a difficult and complex time in the world - we decided to change the label of our Piodilei Chardonnay, recovering its 'historic' label. This is a true "return to the origins" to celebrate the great challenge that we have been pursuing since 1985 thanks to the courageous and pioneering choice of the fourth generation, Pio Boffa: to produce a white wine with body, structure and longevity starting from the great potential of the Langa terroir, initially planting Chardonnay in the Barbaresco area and then later also in the Barolo area. We recall that the name of this Piodilei wine is a tribute to the key role that the Women - or rather the She - have always played in our Family, to their character and volition, very similar to the character of the Langa land.

With fruit from the village of Serralunga d'Alba, the Pio Cesare 2017 Barolo Ornato exhibits a richer textural style and more concentrated fruit flavors compared to all the other Nebbiolo-based wines in this portfolio. Dark cassis and blackberry segue to black licorice and tarry smoke. Those signature hints of rusty nail, earth and candied orange peel that are so specific to this village are also quite evident. The wine shows structure and depth that will help it withstand extra cellar aging. (Monica Larner)

Mosconi is a MGA that is often picked late and so could possibly have benefitted from the warm and dry 20017 vintage. This example from Pio Cesare is focused on elegance with lifted, concentrated aromas and flavours of orange peel, strawberry jam, rose and a touch of smoke, which all become intoxicating on the palate. This great intensity and concentration are supported by firm, muscular tannins and an assertive finish, combined with crisp acidity. Rarely in this 2017 vintage do we find tihs combination of fruit weight and strenght of strucutre. (blind tasted by Aldo Fiordelli)

For about 21 days, small pieces of bark from China Calissaia and China Succirubra are left to macerate in an infusion of alcohol and a very small amount of our "classic" Barolo. We then add a mixture of aromatic spices including gentian root, rhubarb, cardamom seeds, sweet and bitter orange, cinnamon and others, which make up our "historic" Family Recipe.
