Seaward by Spier 1692 is a red wine made from 100 percent Pinotage grapes from the renowned Stellenbosch wine region of South Africa. Pinotage is a grape variety that can safely be called "native" to South Africa, created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Since then, Pinotage has gained a reputation as a symbol of South African wine because of its unique characteristics and versatility in different style expressions. To make Seaward Pinotage, grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and left to macerate for two days in stainless steel tanks. At the end of fermentation, the wine is passed into wooden barrels, where it continues with malolactic fermentation. Then follows a period of maturation, again in wood, part French (80 percent) and part American (20 percent). After about 14 months, the wine is ready to go into bottle. Seaward Pinotage presents itself in the glass with intense notes of black cherries and mulberry berries. In the mouth, it is rich and complex, with the typical characteristics of the Pinotage grape clearly emerging. On the table, this red is ideal to accompany savory meats, such as lamb and pork. Due to its beautiful structure and intense flavors, it goes well with succulent and savory dishes.
