The charm of a pure Pinot Noir. One of the most loved wines by wine lovers at every latitude, in a (masterly) interpretation by the Paolo and Noemia d'Amico winery. But let us proceed with order. Umbria IGP, this Notturno dei Calanchi comes from a selection of grapes from the estate's vineyards in Umbria, an hour from Rome, on the border between Tuscany and Alto Lazio. We are at an altitude of about 550 metres above sea level where, by an extraordinary combination, soils and climate prove to be ideal for the cultivation of the princely vine of Burgundy and Champagne. And French is also the origin of the barriques used, at the end of the transformation, to slowly mature the wine for about a year. At the end of this phase, then, after bottling, Notturno dei Calanchi is placed in the cellar for a further ageing period of about 12 months. It therefore takes more than two years to reach maturity. At that point, however, a red wine of great character and strong personality is revealed. Luminous ruby in the glass, the nose reveals refined and elegant aromas, with a bouquet of fresh red fruits, floral notes and hints of spices. In the mouth, however, it is pleasantly fruity, mineral and savoury, with well-melted tannins of great elegance. The finish is long and silky. Difficult to put it through its paces on the table. Notturno dei Calanchi pairs easily with a wide variety of dishes. Excellent with meat-based first and second courses, it is also very enjoyable with a simple cheese board.

Paolo and Noemia d'Amico's company focuses its production on the processing of international grape varieties, of French origin. But there is one exception. And it is represented by this Agylla. Lazio IGP, this surprising white wine is produced from the native grape variety par excellence of central Italy, Grechetto. In this case, the grapes come from vineyards located in upper Lazio, on the border with Umbria. We are at an altitude of about 450 metres above sea level, in an absolutely unique natural environment. The uniqueness of this wine, however, is not limited to the choice of an indigenous rather than an international grape variety, but also to the special processing technique involving the use of amphorae and steel tanks. The result is a wine characterised by a beautiful golden yellow colour. The nose surprises with a complex combination of aromas, with hints of white flowers, acacia honey, hazelnuts and almonds. In the mouth, however, it proves to be a complex but well-balanced and fresh wine with a broad mineral finish. It should be tried with seafood, but also with fish-based first and second courses or delicate white meat dishes.

It is called Villa Tirrena, after the magnificent mansion, with breathtaking views over the Valle dei Calanchi, owned by Paolo and Noemia d'Amico. In this case, however, it is one of the fine wines produced by the couple, a Lazio IGP made from Merlot and Syrah grapes. Grapes harvested in vineyards located between Rome and Florence, on the border with Umbria, at an altitude of about 450 metres above sea level. Super careful vinification, after processing the wine is left to mature in French oak barriques of first, second and third passage. This delicate phase lasts for about 10 months. It is then bottled and stored in the cellar for another 10 months or so. The result is a wine characterised by a crystal-clear, intense ruby red colour. On the nose, Villa Tirrena reveals itself to be decisive and persistent, with clearly recognisable notes of red fruits, cherries and spices. In the mouth, however, it is ripe and complex, with structured and elegant tannins, all well softened by the long passage in barriques. Excellent with main courses of red meat, roasts and game.
