Lagrein is a grape variety with deep ties to Alto Adige. It seems, in fact, that it was already widely known and appreciated in the Middle Ages when the bright red wine produced with this grape was often referred to as "vino bono", or good wine. Kellerei St. Pauls offers here a modern version of that famous red wine of the area. It is called Zobl and it is made from pure Lagrein grapes from well-sunlit vineyards around the centre of San Paolo/Appiano. Fermentation in open vats and ageing in tonneaux make this a wine to bring to the table for a special occasion. The colour is an intense and lively ruby. Aromas of berries, cherry, violet and dark chocolate stand out on the nose, with cinnamon, cloves and a light smoky sensation. In the mouth it is pleasantly structured. Not excessively alcoholic, it is however velvety and rather persistent. A fabulous wine to accompany a dinner of stewed meats.
