Fortunately, the days are long gone when Gaglioppo, a noble son of Calabria, was considered a minor grape variety in Italian oenology. Today, fortunately, thanks to its considerable potential, it has been rediscovered and exploited to the full, by passionate producers who have made it one of the most appreciated varieties in Calabrian oenology. Among its 'pluses' is undoubtedly the great versatility that makes Gaglioppo suitable for various styles of vinification. Even in pink, as is well demonstrated by this Mabilia, Cirò DOC Rosè, 100% Gaglioppo, proposed by Ippolito 1845. It is produced from grapes harvested when fully ripe in the most suitable flat areas. After a quick maceration on the skins and careful vinification at a controlled temperature, before bottling this rosé is only refined in steel. In the glass it has a beautiful soft pink colour, elegant and delicate. The nose captivates with fragrant notes reminiscent of sweet fruit, such as melon and pink grapefruit. In the mouth it is fresh, savoury and has a nice balance between all its components. The great persistence makes this Calabrian rosé an extremely versatile wine, also in terms of pairing. Excellent as an aperitif, it pairs beautifully with delicately flavoured fish or meat dishes.

The name, for fans of Italian auteur music, recalls distant carefree summers. Mare Chiaro, made from pure Greco Bianco grapes, is the wine to always keep chilled, in the hope that the right occasion will soon come to uncork it and enjoy it. It comes from a blend of grapes harvested in two different phases. This particular technique is used to bring out the best of all the characteristics of the grape variety. The freshness and aromas, in particular, with the first harvest. The structure and body, with the second. For ageing, four months in steel are sufficient. In the glass it has a beautiful, brilliant straw yellow colour. The nose is intense and persistent, with hints of sweet tropical fruit, pear, peach and white flowers. In the mouth, however, it immediately reveals itself to be very fresh, with a pleasant final marine note. Good as an aperitif instead of the classic bubbly, this Calabrian white can accompany fish-based first and second courses with satisfaction. Excellent with a fine grilled or fried fish.

Among the indigenous Calabrian varieties, Gaglioppo plays a leading role. For a long time neglected, today it is finally experiencing a period of great splendour. This is thanks above all to the region's talented producers who, aware of its potential, have placed it at the centre of an important promotion campaign. Such as Ippolito 1845, which has made a personal boast of the valorisation of the region's rich ampelographic heritage. Thus were born wines such as this Colli del Mancuso, Cirò DOC Riserva, produced from pure Gaglioppo grapes. The grapes, left to ripen in the hills until the second half of October, are carefully selected at harvest time. Vinification begins with a long maceration phase on the skins, thanks to which the Gaglioppo yields all its colour and best aromas to the wine. Then, once the vinification phase is over, it continues with a slow maturation in oak barrels for a period of no less than 12 months. This passage gives the finished wine great elegance and an even richer bouquet, with aromas of morello cherry, plum, spices and vanilla. The palate reveals a beautifully structured red, pleasantly soft and finely tannic.

The result is a rosé characterised by a particularly luminous and refined colour. The nose has clear hints of fresh fruit, especially citrus and wild strawberries, and white flowers. In the mouth, however, it is above all fresh, agile, with a pleasant minerality at the end. You only have to uncork a bottle and pour a glass to feel immediately on holiday. In this case, we are dealing with a real oenological gem: a pure Pecorello. This grape variety, indigenous to Calabria, has been known since the late 1800s. Some call it 'Pecorino', at the risk, however, of creating some confusion with the grape variety typical of central Italian regions. The Calabrian 'Pecorello', in fact, is not even a distant relative of it but derives, in all probability, from Greco. Ippolito1845 offers it here in a very interesting version. Vinified in purity, it is aged in steel to bring out its rich aromatic framework. In the glass it has a beautiful, brilliant straw colour. On the nose, it surprises with its beautiful aromatic complexity reminiscent of typical Mediterranean scents, with notes of citrus fruits, yellow-fleshed fruit and vaguely mineral hints. In the mouth, however, it is vibrant and balanced. Naturally endowed with a beautiful aromatic persistence, it is a perfect wine to accompany delicate fish dishes or even vegetarian dishes.

Calabrise, Calabria IGT Rosso, offered here by Ippolito 1845, is a fresh and fragrant wine made from 100% Calabrian grapes. The harvest, strictly manual, takes place quite late in the year, even at the beginning of October. The grapes, delivered early to the cellar to be processed, undergo a long pre-fermentation maceration to best extract colour and aromas. Then, after racking, the wine matures for about seven months in temperature-controlled steel vats to preserve the fragrance of the fruit. This reveals a wine characterised by a beautiful intense red colour with violet reflections. On the nose, hints of red and dark fruit, such as plum and black cherry, and black pepper. In the mouth, it is fresh, pulpy and well characterised by soft, ripe tannins. An excellent companion for snacks, with cold meats and cheeses, as well as tasty meat-based main courses.

Liber Pater is a fine Cirò DOC Rosso, Classico and Superiore, proposed by Ippolito 1845. A wine that comes from the pure processing of Gaglioppo grapes, certainly one of the most important indigenous grape varieties of the Calabria region. Its name most probably derives from a dialect term used to indicate a closed fist. This is because its cluster is particularly compact, with the berries very close together. The grapes used for the production of this important red wine are carefully selected in the vineyard and then undergo a long maceration phase. After racking, the wine is left to mature for no less than 8 months in French oak barrels, which contribute to its noble and elegant character. Ruby red with violet highlights, the nose reveals complex hints of red fruit and flowers, such as violets, well integrated with particularly elegant spicy notes. In the mouth, it proves to be a red wine with good structure and great personality.
