It is called The Bernard Series Bush Vine Pinotage and is a fine South African red from the Bellingham winery. The appellation, Wine of Origin Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, is one of the most popular in South Africa. Here, in fact, a magical combination of climate, soils and traditions allow producers to grow high quality grapes, perfect for making fine wines. Bellingham's historic vineyards, with vines up to 43 years old, are capable of producing high quality wines. Bush-trained, the vines grow in granite soils with low yields. Specifically, the best bunches of Pinotage are carefully selected, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. The must is fermented in open French oak barrels, with daily punching-down. Then, after malolactic fermentation, also in barriques, 50% of the wine is matured in French oak barrels, half new and half second-passage. This maturation phase lasts for about 18 months. In the glass, this Bush Vine Pinotage has a beautiful intense ruby colour with violet hues. On the nose, notes of black cherry, ripe mulberry and raspberry. In the mouth, fruit aromas combine with notes of plum compote, smoked meat and tasty hints of truffle. The finish is long and persistent, well integrated with the wood and spicy notes. Good already, this Pinotage will evolve for at least 10 years. When we uncork it, we can pair it well with meat dishes with a strong flavour. Excellent with game, duck, lamb and, of course, beef.

It is called The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc and is a white wine produced by the Bellingham winery. The winery is located in Franschhoek, a province in the Western Cape. The Stellenbosch appellation, in particular, is one of the most prestigious in the whole of South Africa, covering some 16,000 hectares, from which wines characterised by a particular structure and minerality are produced. A pure Chenin Blanc, the grapes used here come from only three historic vineyards, planted between 1971 and 1983. One of the vineyards is located in Cape Town and, with its cool climate, forms the main component of the wine. The other two, however, are located in the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. Here the soils are predominantly granite, exposed to the elements and shaped by ocean breezes from nearby Table Bay and False Bay. Grapes are harvested in two distinct phases. The first part is intended to influence olfactory perceptions and ferments naturally in concrete and amphora tanks. The second part, on the other hand, ferments naturally in 300-litre oak barrels, about 30% of which are new. After fermentation, the wine undergoes monthly bttonage for approximately 10 months. The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc presents itself in the glass with a beautiful, bright straw yellow colour. The nose has lively citrus and tropical notes with hints of ripe lime, peach and apricot. In the mouth it is fresh, elegant and naturally fruity, with a delicate spiciness. A Chenin Blanc of exceptional concentration, acidity and balance, it is perfect with shellfish, crustaceans and sushi. It also lends itself to pairings with spicy foods, creamy and medium-aged cheeses.

This wine comes from the Stellenbosch region, arguably the most renowned for wine production in South Africa. And it is 100 percent Pinotage, what is considered the most indigenous of the grape varieties on the African continent. It is, in fact, a variety created in South Africa itself, thanks to the studies of scientist Abraham Perold of Stellenbosch University, who crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut. That was 1925, although the first productive vineyards were not harvested until 1943. Homestead Pinotage, offered here by Bellingham, is an interesting red wine, organic and also perfect for vegan consumers. Pinotage grapes, in this case, come from vineyards located about 250 meters above sea level, where the climate and sunshine conditions are ideal. Grapes are hand-picked in late February. In the winery, after a short fermentation on the skins, repeated punching down is done to increase the extraction of color and tannins from the skins. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in barrels for about 12 months. Characterized by an intense dark red color, the nose is characterized by a rich bouquet of sweet spice notes, then plums and mulberries. All this is accompanied by delicate but clearly recognizable hints of vanilla. In the mouth, it is pleasantly fruity, with notes reminiscent of ripe, juicy raspberry, strawberry and black cherry. Again, then, well-integrated spices and an elegant tannic structure. Perfect wine for a red meat pairing. Excellent with the grill and with game.
