A little gem from central Italy. A DOCG wine produced only in the Lazio region with Cesanese grapes, an indigenous regional grape. A wine much loved by the locals that has had, in the past, unjustly, some difficulty in being appreciated outside the borders of the region. But with time, the improvement of the producers and, above all, thanks to the greater propensity of enthusiasts to go looking for the real peculiarities, today it is finally becoming a justly widespread product. Federici's Sapiens is an organic Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, obtained from a careful and thermo-conditioned processing and with a long maceration of the skins to allow the full extraction of the colour. In the glass, therefore, it is a beautiful, intense and brilliant ruby red. The nose is immediate and clean. It has a clear predominance of floral notes, among which violet is particularly recognizable, and juicy, ripe red fruit. The finish has hints of licorice and light balsamic notes. In the mouth it reveals a good power. It's full-bodied and rich. The tannins are well evident, though ripe, and contribute to making the wine the perfect companion to fine meat dinners.

Isaì and a wine from Lazio. A pure Sauvignon Blanc. Federici proposes it. Grapes from the Pontine plain, where the climate is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters, moderate rainfall and warm, well-ventilated summers. The soils, rich in sand, are perfect for the cultivation of France's best-loved aromatic grape variety, which in this case is processed in white, with light maceration of the skins. This is followed by soft pressing and long fermentation at a controlled temperature. At the end of processing, the wine matures for about 4 months in steel tanks before being bottled. In the glass, it has a beautiful intense yellow colour with slight greenish reflections. On the nose, the varietal characteristics stand out, such as tomato leaf, pepper and herbaceous notes, to a sweet finish reminiscent of peach. It starts with a long, very long, maceration of the skins that allows you to extract everything possible from the grapes. Then the refinement. For over seven months the wine is left to rest in contact with its lees to give an added dimension to the final result. All this, however, using only steel containers so as not to distort all the goodness of the original fruit. The result is a wine characterized by an intense ruby red colour. The nose is of ripe red and black fruit, almost jammy. Then spicy notes of pepper, licorice and cinchona. In the mouth it is warm and satisfying. Tannic enough, it can count on a perfect balance of all its components. To really put it at ease, it should be paired with strong flavored meats.

Roma DOC... This is enough to attract our attention. If then, as in this case, it is an excellent wine, things become even more interesting. Collezione Oro di Federici, comes from grapes harvested in the municipality of Zagarolo, in the province of Rome, at about 350 metres above sea level. The climate here is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and moderate rainfall, and warm, breezy summers. The soils are predominantly tufaceous, perfect for planting two grape varieties typical of central Italy, Montepulciano and Cesanese, to which a small percentage of Merlot is added. Vinified at a controlled temperature, maceration and alcoholic fermentation last about 20 days, with frequent punching-down and daily pumping-over. At the end of the transformation, the wine matures in wood for about 6 months, in new 500-litre oak tonneaux, with weekly batonnage. Upon pouring, one discovers a wine characterised by a beautiful bright ruby red colour. The nose is broad, with notes of ripe red fruit that blend well with hints of liquorice and spices. In the mouth, however, it is robust and full-bodied, with well-presented and integrated tannins. Its peculiar acidity, then, well balanced by the fruit and alcohol, makes it particularly long and pleasant. To appreciate it at its best, there is nothing better than a good mix of grilled meats or medium to mature cheeses.

Le Puche is a Zagarolo DOC, son of the rolling hills surrounding Rome and an all-Lazio cut. Malvasia del Lazio Puntinata, 70%, and Trebbiano Giallo the remainder. The vineyards are located about 300 metres above sea level, enough to enjoy a mild climate, thanks to a constant wind that helps to make even the hottest days more bearable. The grapes undergo white wine vinification at a controlled temperature, and the wine produced is aged for about four months in steel containers before being bottled. The result is a beautiful, not excessively intense straw yellow colour. The scents are intense and fruity. Reminiscent of pear and peach, it evolves into refined sensations of acacia honey. In the mouth it is fairly smooth and fresh. Right body and excellent balance between all its components. It is a wine to propose during a dinner where the flavours are delicate. Excellent with vegetable soup, it also goes well with fish or white meat dishes. In short, it certainly doesn't lack versatility. Let's put it to the test!

At a first distracted glance, reading the label of this wine without paying too much attention, one might think that it is a typical Australian red wine made from Shiraz, or Syrah, grapes. But the indication of the varietal on the bottle should not mislead. In fact, we are dealing with an excellent product that is definitely from our home, from the Castelli Romani area. Organic and Federici-labeled. Syrah, in fact, has adapted very well to these parts and, worked with wisdom, it can express itself at truly high levels. To the eye the Syrah Ule has a beautiful, very concentrated, ruby red colour. The nose is a symphony of red fruit and flowers, with the typical memory of spices and in particular black pepper and liquorice. In the mouth it is soft and rich. It has structure and balance, thanks to the natural freshness that balances the alcohol. The tannin is pleasant and silky. You want to be Australian. But luckily you were born in Italy!

Let us start with the blend. In this Pinkstone, Federici proposes a mix of grapes, starting with 60% Montepulciano to which are added, in different percentages depending on the year, other grapes typical of the area, cultivated in accordance with ancient and traditional methods, without resorting to invasive treatments. The vineyards are located in Zagarolo, where the winery is also based. Here the hills with rich tuff soils are perfect for growing healthy, quality grapes. DOC Roma, Pinkstone is an expressive and fascinating rosé wine, processed exclusively in steel, characterised by an excellent freshness and great pleasantness. Pale cherry pink in colour, the nose reveals notes of flowers and fresh fruit, with dog rose, nectarine and citrus. Then raspberry and herbs. In the mouth it is simple but not banal, soft and savoury, delicately fresh and with good persistence. It is simply perfect as an aperitif, accompanying fish and white meat dishes. Delicious with a fried fish or vegetable tempura.

Federici offers this Grané, Passerina del Frusinate, Lazio IGT, Organic. It is produced from grapes harvested in Anagni, in the Frusinate area, in vineyards located between 300 and 500 metres above sea level. Here, unlike in Rome, the climate is characterised by cold winters, with moderate rainfall, but above all cool summers, with average temperatures never exceeding 25 degrees. An area of ancient volcanic origin, the soils are rich in precious minerals and guarantee perfect ripening of the grapes, which are grown here using the traditional "tendone" system. Once in the cellar, the grapes are immediately subjected to soft cold pressing and then fermented at a low temperature, followed by weekly btonnage to obtain greater taste persistence. Before bottling, the wine then rests for at least 4 months in steel tanks. Straw yellow in colour with greenish highlights, the nose is intense, with hints of fruit and white flowers. In the mouth, on the other hand, it reveals a wine characterised by an enveloping and soft flavour, balanced and with good persistence. Served chilled, but not very cold, it pleasantly accompanies raw fish, savoury pies and vegetarian starters.

The processing in the cellar is simple but accurate. Temperature-controlled white vinification and rapid refinement in steel. All done with a view to respecting the most delicate aromas of the initial fruit. Mission accomplished. In the glass, in fact, you discover a wine characterized by a beautiful straw yellow colour, with intense and pleasant scents. White and orris flowers are easily recognized, with fresh white-fleshed fruit and a sweet honey finish. In the mouth it is fresh, sapid, well balanced and has a nice body. A simple but not trivial wine, it is the right choice for an aperitif, but it is also a worthy accompaniment to a lunch or dinner based on raw fish and shellfish.
