The label bears the appellation Lago di Caldaro Scelto Classico. In the bottle is one of the most representative wines of the Alto Adige area, Schiava. A red described as "captivating, pleasantly light and with strong character." A mountain wine, without a shadow of a doubt, quite different from the full-bodied and structured reds that characterize other areas of Italy. In this case, the grapes used for production come from vineyards in Appiano and Caldaro. We are between 300 and 420 meters above sea level, on sandy moraine soils with a south/south-east exposure. After 8 days of fermentation, at a controlled temperature, in stainless steel tanks, the wine ages in tanks, also made of steel, before being bottled. Everything is done to safeguard the freshness of the fruit as much as possible. Brilliant ruby red in color, for that matter, this Schiava offers fresh, fruity aromas. On the nose, aromas of cherry, violet, yeast and a slight hint of hazelnut. In the mouth, on the other hand, it is racy and pleasant drinking, with soft tannins, great freshness and light notes of bitter almond on the finish. Also good when served slightly chilled, it is ideal paired with the classic South Tyrolean snack of speck, salami and cheese.

Wherever you go in the world, there is one wine that is always a great success. We are talking about Pinot Grigio, called "the cosmopolitan" by the managers of the Muri-Gries winery. After all, this is the variety most widely grown in South Tyrol, and here it takes on rather decisive traits. Eclectic wine that gets everyone on the same page. In the version offered by the South Tyrolean winery, the grapes come from vineyards in Bolzano and Appiano that are located at an altitude of 260 to 500 meters, with good exposure and a microclimate strongly influenced by significant temperature swings between day and night. Vinified in stainless steel, simple but precise, this white presents itself in the glass with a beautiful straw-yellow color with greenish highlights. The heady bouquet recalls fresh fruit, ripe Williams pears, black tea and herbs such as mint and lemon balm. We speak of Kretzer referring to rosé born from Lagrein grapes, a technique that was already widespread in the Middle Ages. The name "Kretzer" comes from the word "Kretze," a woven wicker basket in which the must was strained, to separate the juice from the skins. Today, production techniques have refined, of course. But the principle is still the same. It only takes a few hours of contact between must and skins to color the liquid just the right shade of pink. In this case, the Lagrein grapes come from vineyards in Bolzano, at 260 meters above sea level, with roots sinking into deep sandy soils of alluvial origin. In the winery, the technique used is the "salasso" method. About half of the grapes are pressed, while the other half of the must instead rests on the skins for a few hours before fermentation. Once the two parts are combined, the fermentation phase follows, in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Brilliant cherry pink in color, this rosé seduces with its fresh, playful aromas. A fruity bouquet, with cherry, raspberry and currant. In the mouth, however, it has a full structure, pleasant acidity and fine. The Muri-Gries house rosé, despite its pleasant drinkability, has the character and lingering finish of a red wine. Serve slightly chilled in combination with bruschetta, risotto and delicate fish dishes.

We certainly would not put it in the small group of "common" grape varieties in Italy. Yet Silvaner is a grape that can really give great satisfaction. Originally from Germany, this grape variety has found a home in several wine regions of the world, including Italy, and in particular South Tyrol, where, thanks to its cool climate and mineral-rich soils, it gives rise to truly interesting products. Like this one proposed by Muri-Gries. In this case, the grapes grow on the southeast-facing slopes of the Bolzano municipality, at an altitude of about 500 meters. Sandy, gravelly soils that are particularly suited. In the cellar, after a week of temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, the wine ages in tanks, also made of steel. In the glass it has an inviting deep straw yellow color, with clear aromas that recall herbs, such as chamomile and dried hay, fresh flowers, arnica and dandelion. In the mouth, however, it impresses with good structure and pleasant acidity. It is an inviting and pleasant drinking wine, with a warm and persistent finish. Best served chilled, paired with elaborate hors d'oeuvres, it also pairs well with grilled fish and aged cheeses.
