Critone is tangible proof that the Librandi family, known above all for its great ability to enhance the rich Calabrian ampelographic heritage, is in fact also capable of producing fabulous wines from international grape varieties. IGT Calabria, in fact, Critone is a white wine of great personality and freshness, the result of skilful processing of Chardonnay, for 90%, and Sauvignon Blanc for the remainder. Two grape varieties which, it must be said, have settled perfectly into the Librandi family's Calabrian estates and which, suitably processed and blended, give life to a wine that is fresh and savoury, at the same time deep and persistent. Grapes harvested between the end of August and the first week of September, inert thermo-conditioned steel containers are used for vinification. The grapes are soft-pressed to begin the delicate phase of alcoholic fermentation. Then, at the end of the transformation, the wine matures first in steel and then in the bottle, before release. Excellent with hors d'oeuvres and fish-based first courses. Also perfect with fried food and slightly spicy dishes.

100% Gaglioppo. One of the most representative grape varieties of the Librandi winery, it is here proposed in a particularly pleasant version. Gaglioppo, an indigenous Calabrian grape, is a black grape variety that, like many other varieties typical of our South, probably arrived in Italy from Greece. Here it has not struggled to find the ideal conditions to thrive, thanks to its strong adaptability to the most extreme conditions. Gaglioppo is not afraid of drought and the suffocating heat that characterises the summers in this remote corner of Italy. Vinified with care and good technique, it is capable of producing very full-bodied wines, rich in alcohol and tannins. Wines that, to be fully appreciated, require long bottle ageing before ending up on the table. Asylia Rosso, Melissa DOC, has a beautiful ruby red colour in the glass. The nose expresses immediate fruity notes reminiscent of berries and spices. In the mouth, however, despite its strong structure, it is immediately well-balanced, fresh, dynamic and satisfying. A perfect wine "throughout the meal", it pleasantly accompanies cured meats, meat sauces and even white meats.

It is difficult to think of a red wine made from pure Gaglioppo grapes and not fly with the imagination to the beautiful vineyards of Librandi. One of the wineries that have been able to bring the greatest prestige to the region of Calabria and its good local grape varieties. This Segno, Cirò Rosso DOC, certainly does not disappoint expectations. Typical, original and immediate at the same time. Harvested between the end of September and the beginning of October, this red wine of the area is made by a careful vinification in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with soft pressing of the grapes and short maceration. At the end of processing and after racking, the wine is then kept in steel tanks for the subsequent ageing phase. After bottling, and before release, the wine then rests for a few months in the cellar for further ageing. The result is a pleasant and intense red, like the aromas of the Mediterranean maquis. Excellent with grilled meats and medium-aged cheeses, this red wine 'made in Calabria' should not remain in the cellar too long. It is particularly appreciated in the first three years after release.

Terre Lontane, IGT Calabria, is a very pleasant rosé from Librandi. The winery is undeniably one of the best known in the region. A delicate, velvety and fruity rosé, the harvest takes place in the first week of September. Vinification, traditional in temperature-controlled steel tanks, involves the use of the "salasso" technique and a brief maceration of the skins with the must. This is followed by an ageing phase, again in steel, and a resting period of a few months in the bottle before final release. As often happens when tasting a rosé wine of this type, it is easy to find the right match. A wine of great versatility, it goes well with both meat dishes and fish. Its origin is easy to guess. The white Greek, in fact, although a grape variety that is grown mainly in Calabria, seems to derive from Greece, having arrived in our south over the centuries, finding an ideal climate and soil here. Characterised by medium-sized bunches, with berries endowed with a thick, pruinose skin, in the cellar it proves to be extremely versatile, yielding excellent sweet wines but also, as in this case, fragrant dry whites. A 100% Greco bianco, Asylia Melissa Bianco DOC proposed here by the Librandi winery, comes from careful processing of the best Greco grapes, vinified in steel, with soft pressing and ageing, again in steel. This is followed by a brief stay in the bottle for a few months before release. Pale straw yellow with greenish reflections. The nose opens with citrus nuances and light vegetal tones. All made even more appealing by the subtle mineral vein. In the mouth it is fruity and floral, with good persistence. Pleasantly savoury, it goes perfectly with fish-based first courses. To be served as an aperitif, this white will certainly accompany the whole meal with gusto.

White, but certainly not a simple wine. Efeso, Calabria IGT, proposed here by the Librandi winery, one of the most important and historic in Calabria, comes from a pure processing of Mantonico grapes. This rare and ancient vine is considered indigenous to Calabria and is cultivated mainly in the Crotone area. The name of the wine refers to the city of Ephesus where, according to legend, the philosopher Pythagoras landed after leaving the island of Samos. This white wine is the result of super careful processing of the grapes harvested in the estate's vineyards. It starts with a soft pressing of the grapes, to preserve their integrity and aroma, followed by a slow fermentation in French Allier oak barrels. Here the wine remains in contact with its yeasts for about six months, acquiring complexity and structure, as well as toasted and vanilla notes. This is followed by bottling and a further six months' rest in the cellar before release. Straw yellow in colour with golden hues, the nose reveals itself to be incredibly fruity and floral, with distinct hints of white peach, green apple, white flowers and honey. There are also citrus notes of lemon and orange, as well as pleasant mineral nuances that lend freshness and elegance. In the mouth it is soft, creamy and enveloping, with a good acidity that makes it balanced and pleasant. The finish is savoury and almondy, with a good aromatic persistence. A good wine even today, it has a good capacity for ageing. If stored well, it can continue to evolve positively for up to eight years. On the table it is a splendid accompaniment to fish-based main courses, such as mixed grills and fried food. Also excellent with cheeses, more or less mature.

The one proposed here is one of Calabria's most representative wines. It is called Duca Sanfelice, Cirò DOC Riserva Classico Superiore, a red wine produced by the Librandi winery, one of the most important and historical wineries in the region. It comes from a pure processing of Gaglioppo grapes, which is considered the native Calabrian vine par excellence. Its name refers to the feud of Sanfelice, where the Librandi family owns the vineyards from which the grapes come. Vinified in steel with a 7-10 day maceration of the skins to extract colour and aromas, at the end of the transformation the wine matures in steel and cement vats for two years. At the end of this phase, after being bottled, the wine rests in the cellar for a few months before being put on the market. Duca Sanfelice Cirò DOC Riserva Classico Superiore has a dark ruby red colour with garnet hues. The nose reveals an intense and complex bouquet reminiscent of ripe red fruits, such as cherry, plum and blackberry, enriched by balsamic notes of mint and eucalyptus, and intriguing spicy nuances of black pepper and cinnamon. In the mouth it is full, warm and enveloping, with a good tannic structure well balanced by freshness and savouriness. A versatile wine, on the table it can accompany the entire meal, although it best expresses its qualities with red meat dishes, roasts and braised meats. But also game, venison and mature cheeses. Good today, it is a wine that if stored well can easily age for several years in the cellar.
